A 5 days itinerary to discover the unique territory of Val d'Orcia and Crete Senesi, including the visit to the Etruscan site of Tumulo del Molinello in Ascano the tickets for the Antiquarium museum of Murlo and a wine tasting.
Day 1 - Arrival day
Pick-up at Chiusi railway station and transfer to a typical agriturismo of Val d'Orcia. Welcome dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2 – ‘The Gladiator’
San Quirico d’Orcia - Pienza walk: a walk of 8 – 10 Km to the lovely village of Pienza through classic Tuscan landscapes, where the film The Gladiator was filmed. Along the way stop for a delicious pic-nic lunch. After the walk, once you have reached the village of Pienza, you can enjoy free time to visit this unique Renaissance village. Transfer to the agriturismo in Val d’Orcia, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3 - Asciano & Murlo
Breakfast in agriturismo and prepare to visit one of the most important archaeological sites of the Asciano area: the tumulo of Molinello and the necropolis of Poggio Pinci. We will continue our trip to Murlo passing in front of the granary of Cuna. Lunch along the route. Murlo whose origins are linked to the Etruscan civilization, lies on the border between the Val di Merse to which it belongs and the area of the Crete Senesi (to which Asciano belongs). The Etruscan origins of Murlo are testified by the findings of Poggio Civitate and Poggio Aguzzo. Visit the village and the Museo Civico Antiquarium of Poggio Civitate, where there are numerous finds from the municipality, such as the necropolis of Poggio Aguzzo and the Etruscan site of Poggio Civitate one of the most important discoveries regarding the population of northern Etruria. In the late afternoon transfer to the agriturismo, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4 - Val d'Orcia
Breakfast in agriturismo and prepare for the tour of Val d'Orcia. The Orcia valley is a unique environment where man is still at one with his surroundings, an environment which many Sienese Medieval and Renaissance artists fell in love with. In this area many works of art are to be found: XIIth century monuments, town walls and very old hamlets like BagnoVignoni, whose Roman origin is witnessed by a Latin inscription on a travertine stone. At Bagno Vignoni hot springs originate from under the soil at a temperature of around 40°C, rich in sulphur and calcium. It still belongs to the Chigi family, who have owned it since 1170. We end our itinerary visiting the Tentennano strong-hold, that shows how fortifications were made at the time and the way in which people defended themselves and resisted during sieges. Then we will experience how the grain becomes flour in one of the oldest stone mills in the area. Stop in their organic farm for a light lunch. End our itinerary visiting San Quirico d'Orcia brewery (includes a tasting of their beer and local produce). After the visit , transfer back to the agriturismo dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5 - Check-out
Breakfast and check-out. Transfer to Chiusi railway station and departure.
